Mercado Global was launched fifteen years ago by founder Ruth Alvarez-DeGolia with a mission to transform the lives of Latin American women, their families, and their communities – making a lasting, positive impact. Their holistic approach to poverty alleviation is broken down into three segments:
Community Based Education: Mercado Global gives training in local languages to enable women to become confident leaders in charge of family health, education, and finances.
Access to Market: the women Mercado Global partners with are incredibly talented weavers and sewers, whose main barrier between a life of poverty and unlimited possibilities is access to a market. Mercado Global works with these women to provide design support, raw materials, marketing, and shipping.
Asset Development: artisans receive low-interest microloans to purchase a sewing machine or loom, only making loan payments when they have orders through Mercado Global.
