Interview with Brook & Bull Winemaker and Founder, Ashley Trout

Brook & Bull wines are scrumptious, bold, and super smooth. It's our go-to gift for dinner parties. And the winemaker, Ashley Trout is one special lady. Not only does she make exquisite wine at a fabulous price point, she helps provide better healthcare for vineyard and cellar workers. Cheers to that! Photo credit: Victoria Wright

where is your hometown?

Originally Washington DC, but I’ve been in Walla Walla, WA for twenty years.

what does your household look like?

Married, a 7 year old son and a 9 year old daughter and two dogs (one good and one bad)

what year did your company launch?

2016

what originally sparked your idea for the company?

I love making wine. This is my third winery. I wanted to focus on blends that fit no tradition and high end, boutique wines that aren’t overly oaked.

what do you love most about your company?

It’s all about creating beauty in this world and we get to do it with fun people in a great place.

What is a current goal you are striving for?

Efficacy…

How do you keep up your mental health?

Lots of exercise, baths, fireplaces, journaling and some music.

Looking back on your entrepreneurial journey, what do you wish you had done differently?

Taken myself more seriously early on. I didn’t think that I deserved to be asking big money from investors or hiring experts in their field and paying accordingly early on and now I realize that was a disservice to us all.

if you could give some advice to your 21-year-old self, what would you say?

Take the big leaps. I’ve taken lots and they’ve worked well, but still, if I could do anything differently, it would’ve been more leaps more often, and bigger ones.
