Interview with OMAMImini Founder, Ola Omami

OMAMImini is a line of children's clothing that's a little bit vacation, a little bit rock-n-roll, and a whole lot of style. Founder and designer extraordinaire Ola Omami beautifully blends her European and Californian aesthetic into comfortable and contemporary clothing for our little rockers.

where is your hometown?

A small town Tver near Moscow, Russia. My family moved to Israel when I was 11, Canada when I was 18, and then I came over to the US when I was 24, so there was a lot of moving around :)

what does your household look like?

I live with my really good looking husband Eva, my almost 11 year old daughter, and two cornish rex cats, Yohji and Gucci.

what year did your company launch?

2012

what originally sparked your idea for the company?

When I had my daughter and had a hard time finding the right clothes for her, a friend of mine, fashion designer, suggested I just design it myself. I'm an industrial designer by trade and knew how to design a chair or a toothbrush but not clothing, so it seemed like a crazy idea, but eventually it happened.

what do you love most about your company?

It creates a real community of like-minded parents that value certain style and vibe in clothing and in everything they surround themselves with, and who wouldn't compromise when shopping for their kids. I also like it that we're small enough to actually hear the feedback of our customers in person and implement it into our products fairly quickly.

What is a current goal you are striving for?

Having a more consistent selection for moms to match their kids. We're occasionally doing small "Mommy & me" capsule collections and they're always such a hit, I'd really like to develop in this direction.

How do you keep up your mental health?

I have weekly sessions with a therapist and I'm seeing a psychiatrist once every few months to check if I need to adjust my meds. I meditate most days in the morning and recently got into kundalini yoga which seems to be rather magical. I make sure I take at least one real day off a week (which is not that easy when you're self employed), when I'm not checking emails, not answering texts and not even thinking or talking about work related issues. More than anything though, I love my standup pedalboard to clean my head and literally get away from it all.

Looking back on your entrepreneurial journey, what do you wish you had done differently?

Hired an assistant earlier. It felt like I couldn't afford it for a while till someone I really respect in terms of business acumen said that I really can't afford not to because I'm missing opportunities left and right and slowing myself down.
