Interview with Beastly Threads Founder, Torrey Shawe

From the softest scarves and kaftans to vibrant table runners, Beastly Threads offers quite the value proposition. Give yourself or your table a sophisticated jolt of color AND help save endangered animals. Kinda cool. Below, we asked founder Torrey Shawe to share more about Beastly Threads and her entrepreneurial journey.

where is your hometown?

I am from Connecticut but after years in San Francisco, Washington DC, and Santiago Chile, I am now living in Vaucresson, France right outside Paris.

what does your household look like?

I have been married to my cute husband Tony for 15 years. We have two amazing kids, Sarah (10) and Nathaniel (13), who thankfully seem to enjoy the adventures we keep dragging them on and still laugh at our jokes.

what year did your company launch?

2015

what originally sparked your idea for the company?

After years of working in educational reform, I was looking for something new. I wanted to be my own boss, tap into my creative side, and make an impact on the world. After one plane ride of brainstorming, I settled on eco-ethical textiles that support wildlife.

what do you love most about your company?

I love the products themselves. They are beautiful, colorful, and well-made by talented artisans. And I LOVE sending money to the incredible environmental organizations that Beastly supports.

What is a current goal you are striving for?

I want to get Beastly items into the hands of more people, so that I can send as much money as possible to the non-profits we support. The environmental situation could not be more dire, so our help is critical.

How do you keep up your mental health?

Although I have always found sanity in running, these days, I find a long walk and good Podcast to be the best kind of therapy.

Looking back on your entrepreneurial journey, what do you wish you had done differently?

I bet on a couple of vendors who took advantage of my naivete and trust. I wish I had not given them the benefit of the doubt so many times.

if you could give some advice to your 21-year-old self, what would you say?

Take out a loan and buy that crappy pre-Internet flat in San Francisco. I’d be a gazillionaire now!
